DOCUMENTS: (Click the BACK button to get back to this page)
According to Josephine's birth certificate she was born April 23, 1915 and her mothers name is Ella T. Hoke, this is probably the only information that is correct on this document. On the certificate they have her name as Evelyn Sebering, but her parents had applied for a name change to Josephine Ruth Sebring before she was 5 years of age as her name is listed as Josephine in the 1920 census. I am trying to get a copy of the name change document then I will have further information. The birth certificate also has Ella's birthplace as Tannersville, Pennsylvania, but she was born in Canadensis, Barrett Township, Monroe County, Pennsylvania. When Ella was 1 year of age she is listed in the 1880 census as the youngest child of John and Catherine (Vogt) Hoke living in Barrett Township, Monroe County. The big thing on the birth certificate is they have her father's name as William R. Sebering with his birthplace as Canadensis, Pennsylvania and his age as 47(abt. 1868). I do not believe this information is correct. I have not found any information on William from Canadensis or anywhere in Monroe County. Her father as we were told was Robert Wellington Sebring and he was born in 1868 in Tannersville, Pocono Township, Monroe County, Pennsylvania.
In 1910 Robert and Ella Sebring lived on Bartonsville Road in Stroud Township and this is presumed to be were Josephine was born. The family had moved sometime after her birth and rented the house at 619 Ann Street in Stroudsburg. The 1920 Census has Josephine at the age of 5 years as the youngest child of Robert and Ella (Hoke) Sebring. (1920 Census- Source Citation: Year: 1920; Census Place: Stroud, Monroe, Pennsylvania; Roll: T625_1603; Page: 10B; Enumeration District: 64; Image: 1093.)
By the time that Josephine was 15 years of age both of her parents had passed on, her Mother on March 12, 1925 from stomach cancer and her father on April 9, 1930 from a longtime illness. I have been told that she went to live with Aunt Sarah after her mother died. Her father moved to Newton, New Jersey with his cousin Emanuel Sebring to care for him in his final years. The 1930 Census records show Josephine living with Simon and Sarah (Hoke) Wolbert her Aunt and Uncle. They rented a house at 57 Tenth Street in Stroudsburg. (1930 Census- Source Citation: Year: 1930; Census Place: Stroudsburg, Monroe, Pennsylvania; Roll: 2080; Page: 6B; Enumeration District: 23; Image: 510.0.)
Josephine may have met Russell when she lived with Aunt Sarah as his Uncle Charles Eilber lived next door at 61 Tenth Street. I have not been able to find record of where Russell lived in 1930, he would have been 21 at the time, but in 1920 he lived with his parents John and Carrie (Kays) Eilber who rented a house at 828 Sarah Street in Stroudsburg just 2 blocks from Josephine. If Russell walked to his Uncle Charles's house from his house he would have to pass by Aunt Sarah's house to get there. Russell's father still lived on Sarah Street in 1930. (1920 Census- Source Citation: Year: 1920; Census Place: Stroudsburg, Monroe, Pennsylvania; Roll: T625_1603; Page: 19A; Enumeration District: 62; Image: 1034.)
Josephine's marriage to Daulton Serfass Sr.
When my mother was born on January 10, 1938 my grandmother would have been 22 and my grandfather would have been 28 years of age. I do not know where they lived at the time but my mother remembers living on North Courtland Street in East Stroudsburg as a child and attending St. Mary's Catholic School. It has been said that Josephine and Russell were never married but when he enlisted in World War II on April 27, 1945 he put on his application that he was divorced with dependents so I am not sure if they were married or if he put that on his application so my mother could receive his pension from the Army. In 1949 Josephine and Frederick Fischer were united in marriage by Justice of the Peace William Walton. Frederick was born October 11, 1899 in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York the son of Ente Oswell and Margaret Fischer. They had a wedding supper at Fernwood and followed with a reception at the Tom-X Ranch. At the time of their marriage Josephine lived at 290 N. Courtland Street in East Stroudsburg. The guest list included Mr. and Mrs. John Mannix. (Source: The Daily Record- Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania)

In 1977, grammy had fallen and broke her hip and during her recovery period my parents had moved to New Jersey so I stayed in Stroudsburg to finish out my 7th grade school year with my grandmother. During the time that I had spent with her she had painted several oil paintings, some were sold but alot of them are still in the possession of her descendants.
Josephine had sold her house in Stroudsburg and moved in with her daughter in Great Meadows, New Jersey were she lived until she passed away on December 24, 1994.
